At this welcoming pottery collective in the Dickerson Road’s DIY artspace district, not far from downtown Reno, Mother’s Day shoppers can fill a handmade vase with flowers, snack on pastries from Perenn bakery, and get their hands dirty with drop-in workshops by nearby Atelier Reno. Artist Julie Steiner will be painting on the spot, and the group has a few other surprises in store, too.

Joe + Shiho Winter’s pottery studio is at their home in the Rancho Haven neighborhood, about 40 miles north of downtown Reno, up I-395 or Red Rock Road. Joe‘s been perfecting vases, mugs, plates, and other functional pottery for decades. Shiho sculpts animals, ornaments, and kitchen wares with intricate surface designs. Just a few miles past the border of northern Washoe County and California, a lovely Sunday drive out of Reno leads to quiet, low-stress gift shopping at an outdoor pottery “showroom” with a view across picturesque Long Valley. Here’s the latest from Great Basin Pottery’s Casey Clark: “I’ll be kicking off the first weekend with pots from our most recent wood firing, and for the second weekend I’ll be restocked with new work from the stoneware kiln. There will be plenty of pottery to pick from no matter when you make it out. … Shopping is outside and please bring a mask. Cash or cards accepted.” Handmade textile items from Sarah Lillegard will be on offer as well.
