City of Reno to dedicate new mural today

The City of Reno will unveil a new mural by Miles Toland today at Teglia’s Paradise Park Activity Center. The mural features people recreating and relaxing in a park and urban wildlife against a colorful desert sunset. The dedication ceremony will take place at 1 pm at the park.

UNLV accepting MFA applications

The UNLV Department of Art invites artists to apply for the Fall 2024 MFA Program in Art. The three-year MFA is studio-based and research-focused with an emphasis on creative practice, interdisciplinarity, community engagement, and professional development. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2024. MFA hopefuls can also apply for Graduate Assistantships, which include a tuition waiver, health insurance, and a stipend. The department will hold virtual information sessions for potential applicants on Oct. 24, Nov. 14, and Dec. 11. For additional information, email art.gradcoord@unlv.edu.

NMA names new wing for Charles and Stacie Mathewson

The Nevada Museum of Art announced that the new wing currently under construction will be named the Charles and Stacie Mathewson Education and Research Center in honor of Charles N. Mathewson and Stacie Mathewson. The couple made a $16 million gift to the project, which has a total cost of $60 million and is intended to serve students, educators, and scholars. Plans include a new library, a 100 percent increase in the amount of gallery space, a new art collections area, a bookshop, and sculpture garden. The expansion project was announced in June 2022 and is expected to be completely in 2025.

Sierra Arts opens new space for art classes

Sierra Arts Foundation in Reno is opening the Sierra Arts Academy Teaching Space inside the 1995 Dickerson Road building, where area artists can host their own classes for children and adults.  The Grand Opening is today at 5pm with live music, food, and demos. More info here
