Sierra Arts Grant open through May 31

The application deadline for the Sierra Arts Grant for visual artists is May 31. Three $1,000 grants will be awarded, one each for photography, 2D, and 3D. To qualify, artists must live in Nevada and within 200 miles of Sierra Arts, which is in downtown Reno. The application is here.

RTA Awards open through July

The Reno Tahoe Artist (RTA) Awards opened May 6 and will close July 28. This awards program and Gala were created “to recognize individual achievement and the overall ascendency of Reno Tahoe into a national destination for arts and culture.” Six awards will be given in September, including a grand prize. New arts building proposed for UNLV

According to a May 5 post from the UNLV News Center, efforts are underway to persuade Nevada lawmakers to support and approve approximately $5.1 million in state funds for a new arts building. (The post discusses early lobbying efforts from the point of view of sculpture student McKenzie Easter.)

Museums offer free admission to military families 

The National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families announced this week that museums nationwide will offer free admission to blue star families (families who have a member who is on active military duty). The program will begin on Armed Forces Day, May 20, and end on Labor Day, Sept. 4. The participating museums in Nevada are:

Carson City—State Railroad Museum and Nevada State Museum

Elko—Northeastern Nevada Museum

Las Vegas—Burlesque Hall Of Fame, Neon Museum, Springs Preserve, and Nevada State Museum

Reno—National Automobile Museum, Nevada Historical Society, and Nevada Museum of Art

Sparks—Sparks Heritage Museum
