Memorial for Valerie Serpa this weekend
A memorial for Valerie Serpa, the former director of Fallon’s Oats Park Art Center, will be held this Sunday, Feb. 13, from 12 - 4pm at the art center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon. The memorial is open to the public and all are welcome. A livestream on YouTube featuring speakers at the memorial will begin at 1pm.
Nevada Arts Council hires 2 new specialists
The Nevada Arts Council has hired Erica Hill as a Community Arts Development specialist and Sapira Cheuk as an Artist Services specialist.
Hill assists nonprofit arts organizations and municipalities with program development, grant offerings, and support functions. She is based out of the Carson City office.
Cheuk assists Nevada artists with professional development via grant offerings, touring exhibitions, and the Nevada Poet Laurate Program. She is based out of the Las Vegas office.
‘Avengers’ actor Jeremy Renner is making a TV show at The Generator
Actor Jeremy Renner (from The Avengers and The Hurt Locker), who lives in Reno, is creating a new television series for Disney+ at The Generator in Sparks. The show, titled Rennervation, involves customizing decommissioned service vehicles such as buses and fire trucks. Renner and his team have not disclosed what forms the converted vehicles will ultimately take, but Auto Evolution reported this week that in past projects, “he turned ambulances into mobile veterinary units and buses into tiny homes, glamping units, or mobile gyms and barbershops.”
The Generator is expected to open to the public this spring. Dates are still TBA.
New gallery opens this weekend in Mineral County
David and Maryknoll Bowen of Walker Lake announced that their new gallery, Bizarre 101, will hold its grand opening this weekend, in a building they’ve spent the last four years renovating. “We are now here to showcase and sell the art of Mineral County artists and collectors,” Maryknoll said in an email.
The grand opening is on Sat., Feb. 12 from 11am-4pm. Bizarre 101 is located on Highway 95 between Big Horn Crossing and the Baptist Church. For more information, email mineralgirl139@gmail.com.
Nevada Museum of Art’s A+E programs are now on YouTube
Much of the programming from the Nevada Museum of Art’s 2021 Art + Environment Season: Land Art: Past, Present, Futures, is now online in video form. Presenters include Philipp Kaiser, Miwon Kwon, Edgar Arceneaux, Judy Chicago, Lucy Lippard, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Mary Miss, and Nevada’s own Justin Favela. You can watch the videos on the museum’s YouTube channel.
Sierra Arts takes over leadership of 2 Reno art orgs
Sierra Arts Foundation announced this week that two Reno organizations will now operate under its umbrella—Reno Open Studios, which previously operated as an independent nonprofit, and the gallery/studio complex at 1995 Dickerson Road, formerly run by Reno Art Works.
There will be an open house at 1995 Dickerson on Saturday, March 19, featuring food trucks, music, and an opportunity to meet the artists.
