Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is a national competition for middle and high school students. Since its inception, more than 13 million young people have participated in this program, which has given early recognition to such notables as Andy Warhol, Joyce Carol Oates, Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Richard Avedon, Kay Walkingstick, Steven King, Zac Posen and Lena Dunham.
As the Southern Nevada Regional Affiliate, the Springs Preserve manages the program locally. Students can receive Honorable Mention, Silver Key or Gold Key awards in multiple categories and the highest scoring Gold Key pieces are considered for the local American Visions (art) or American Voices (writing) awards, acting as a Best-In-Show award (there are five nominees in both art and writing, with the final award announced in late Spring). Students who win awards are eligible for a number of cash scholarships at the national level. Competitive grants are also available for educators.
